Yu Yu Hakusho: it has truly loveable characters, the strongest anime teamwork ever witnessed, and excellent overall writing. Plus, it's only like a 114 episode anime, written by the same author of HxH, so you seem some sweet similarities.
Great Teacher Onizuka: a slice of life anime, about the most badass/unconventional teacher you always dreamed you would have. He tackles an insanely ill behaved class and administrators/colleagues/parents who all of which hate his guts. Naruto: Yo this kid is called the 'number one hyperactive knucklehead ninja' for a reason. Naruto is all about never giving up and never going back on your word, if that kinda of idea vibes with you, check it out. Interesting fights, supremely amazing characters, and several awesome plot arcs, make this a real winner. Gungrave: This is a mature and deeply philosophical anime.
It follows two friends turned enemies, from their time in boyhood trying to impress the mob, to men who are both fierce and powerful rivals vying for control of the entire mafia world. Also, it's only 26 episode, definitely worth some downtime. Code Geass: The best anime.period.In my humble opinion. I don't think anyone can say they ever saw a single bad episode. Also, it only has 2 seasons, both 25 episodes apiece. It's a super intelligent, highly intense and unbelievably plot twisty.
If you don't want a new obsession, avoid the first episode at all costs. I'm an anime watcher/manga reader of 12 years, and out of all of shounen manga (shounen manga being stuff like Hunter x Hunter) the only one I have ever thought was better was One Piece. One Piece starts out slow too, just like Hunter x Hunter and the beginning isn't very serious, but it quickly shifts into a serious tone, and it also has a huge sense of adventure. Hunter x Hunter is a bit more grimdark as of the Ant Arc, but One Piece has character death and tragedy too.
Of the two I think One Piece and Hunter x Hunter are very close, but I give the slight edge to One Piece. Anime wise, One Piece is great for about 500 episodes, then once you get past the time skip the anime studio forgot to make filler so the pacing becomes DBZ bad. I'd suggest reading the manga if you find it unbearable. HIGH QUALITY SHOUNEN BATTLE ANIME. One Piece (arguably the best, its the best selling manga in Japan for a reason). Yu Yu Hakusho (Same mangaka as HxH, it is also great).
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (This one is superb, not as focused on battles though.). Hokuto no ken (This is one of the classics, this one arguably helped shape shounen manga as it is today. The manga is uncensored, but the anime is equally good with minor changes to the story.). Soul Eater (This one is good until it diverges from the manga near the end, but its done so well I have to mention it.).
DBZ Kai (This is DBZ minus filler, with touched up visuals and new audio. If you haven't seen DBZ Kai but you have seen DBZ you are missing out. This is DBZ the way it was meant to be portrayed with very few differences from the manga. It has a completely different feel to it than DBZ. Fans of the manga will be pleased. Kai is something like 'rebirth' or 'reborn'.) LIST OF HIGH QUALITY SHOUNEN BATTLE MANGA (Anime is either bad or non-existent).
Zetman MANGA VERSION (This one is great, the anime is different). Claymore MANGA VERSION (This one is also great, if the Theresa arc doesn't get you blood pumping I don't know what will. The anime is different in a bad way.). Kenichi MANGA VERSION (Arguably one of the best shounen battle mangas of all time, this one takes a somewhat realistic approach to martial arts while also throwing in completely unrealistic human capabilities. It is super good. The anime version is different in a bad way).
Fairy Tail MANGA VERSION (This one is decent, its not nearly as good as the others but its a light read. The anime is terrible.).
Veritas MANWHA ONLY (This one is from Korea, but its incredible. Arguably one of the best 'shounen battle' style manwhas. The Breaker MANWHA ONLY (Not quite as good as Veritas but its on equal footing, has a sequel.) LIST OF SHOUNEN ANIME/MANGA THAT ARE EXTREMELY GOOD ONLY DURING CERTAIN PARTS.
Naruto - This one has a lot of hate, its because it is terrible after the time-skip. Prepare for 130 episodes of ecstasy, then prepare for incredibly hit and miss quality. I still read the manga, but its gotten bad. You have to watch at least the first half, or read it. It's seriously good.
This one I feel confident recommending the anime, it has some pacing issues but they hired good animators for all of the fights. Bleach MANGA VERSION - This one suffers from the same problem as naruto, a great start (Soul Society Arc) but then it becomes a broken record. Nothing happens. Its the same shit over and over. However the first arc was so good it tricked some people like me into reading the rest of the manga which was abysmal. The anime is done extremely poorly, the quality of the manga is more consistent. I could make this list longer, but then I'd be recommending stuff that isn't exactly 'great'.
I wouldn't say IMO that One Piece is at all better than Hunter X Hunter, but it is pretty good. I would basically break it down to these pro's and con's (IN TERMS OF ANIME, NOT MANGA) PROS:. When it's good it's great.
When they really get into the big plot pieces, I feel the story is very engaging and it's hard to put down. The characters are diverse and there is pretty much a character for everyone to like (and hate cough usopp cough). The plot keeps your wondering on what's next. Everything before the Whitebeard arc keeps you wondering how strong Whitebeard is and what he does, etc, but doesn't actually reveal it until it's time.
Builds more epicness. Gives the full range of emotions while watching. CONS. HOLY COW DOES IT DRAG!
The most frustrating part of the anime is how little happens per episode, how much of it is just filler, and how long they focus on stupid things. Not to mention that sometimes they will do flashbacks for 10 straight episodes of content you've already seen. Between the opening and closing (especially as it progresses), the opening song / previous episode summary / and content added to the beginning of the episode that tries to catch you up from the previous episode, you get about 12-15 minutes of actual, slow moving content. The characters 'weaknesses' always have to be exploited in EVERY instance they could possibly occur.
Zoro will always get lost the second they have to go from point A to point B, Sanji will always refuse to fight the female opponent and fall in love with her, Usopp will always be a coward, Luffy will always do exactly the opposite of whatever plan was developed, etc. It's quite annoying when they literally focus 5 episodes on Sanji dying from a server nose bleed from all the beautiful women he was exposed to and actually made that a significant plot device. The fighting element is essentially similar to DBZ. There is no strategy really involved in 90% of the fighting, they just fight fight fight until something lucky happens or a weakness is exploited and that ends the fight. Luck plays a HUGE factor in almost everything that goes on in the show. So many instances where someone gets saved just in time by one thing or another.
Overall, I would say that I like One Piece, but I wouldn't even put it close to how much I like Hunter X Hunter. You'd probably like One Piece if you like HxH, but I doubt you'd find it better in most cases. I'm okay with that sort of thing if their was some sort of turning point where they improved on this. But they just never do. I find it quite annoying when they just keep repeating the same plot structure over and over when it comes to character roles.
Nami has that money obsession thing going on, but that seemed much less pronounced throughout the series than the rest, so I don't have much of an issue with her. Bones should have better songs written for him outside of the first one they introduced him with. Every song after that was very half assed IMO.
Franky got the worst of the worst re-designs when the 2 year gap happens. Those braided pig-tails. Robin I actually liked all around pretty much.
Chopper I also like. He has a bit of Usopp in him, but he's much more dependable and motivated than Usopp. Plus he has a cute and cuddly factor to him that Usopp does not. Luffy has the type of character flaws that are very likable, though, so it doesn't really effect my likeness of him. I do really like Luffy.
The rest I've already mentioned.
